TAG! / HILMAR MULDER
In the previous Village Tine Trappers, Chef Reportage of the Belgian women’s weekly Flair, tagged Hilmar Mulder. She wanted to know whether Hilmar really leads a glamorous life.
Hilmar Mulder (1968) is Editor-in-Chief of Grazia, the glossy fashion weekly. She is married to Wim Spijkers. They have two sons, Stafke (ten years) and Jules (six years). Together with their rabbit Choco they live in a quiet neighbourhood of Amsterdam.
1. What kind of magazine or website is Hilmar Mulder? Down to earth, fast, thorough, high fashion, intelligent, and upbeat. You could say where Vogue meets NU.nl.
2. What is your ‘desert island book’? Arhundhati Roy: The god of small things. I have read this book once and I am still waiting to read it again, because I know I am going to like it even better then the first time. It’s a tragic love story about an Indian Girl and the writing style is so poetic and captivating that you want to read it really slowly so you can enjoy it longer.
3. What is the brand or line extension that is most appealing to you? Internet sites! Internet sites are also about content, and more and more about good looks as well.
4. Describe Grazia in one sentence? Grazia is the glossy weekly with the unique editorial mix of fashion, celebrity news and real life stories, for contemporary women.
5. What does an Editor-in-Chief of Grazia do all day? Normally on a Monday morning we would have our Hot Stories-meeting to decide which stories we are going to run in next week’s edition. However, as I am writing this (on a Monday morning) I am in Thailand filming Holland’s Next Top Model. In a few minutes I will be off to the models’ estate to do the fitting for the Grazia fashion shoot.
6. What kind of work would you be doing if you didn’t have your current job? If I would not have been so lucky to be in the magazine world, I probably would be working in the fashion industry because I was trained as a fashion designer. Nowadays I can’t see me doing anything like that anymore, my heart is with magazines…
7. Who would you like to sit next to in a plane and to what destination? I would fly to Cambodia with Kofi Annan and Robbie Williams. I would like to have deep and meaningful conversations with Robbie at the Foreign Correspondence Club in Phnom Penh while watching the sunset over the Mekong. Later on I would like to go dancing with good old Kofi. It’s about time the man had some fun!
8. What success are you most proud of? The team of Grazia managed to launch a magazine, from ‘the Go’ to the newsstand delivery of the first edition, in only nine weeks.
9. Describe your biggest failure? That I still can’t shake a mean Martini.
10. What is the one thing that everybody should know about you but nobody does? I was born in Korea, that’s why my favourite dish is still bulgogi.
Hilmar Mulder tags Frank Hizert, publisher in Prague (Czech Republic) to answer our questions next. Does the fact that Frank used to be a journalist make him a better publisher, especially abroad?
